Polish recipe for Easter

In just 2 weeks we will be celebrating Easter which is a very important Catholic holiday in Poland. For those of you who haven’t participated in Polish Easter traditions yet, we have prepared a small crib. :)

Palm Sunday – takes place 7 days before Easter and it begins the so called ‘Holy Week’. On this day people go to churches with palms in their hands, but the palms have not much in common with the real palms growing in the tropics. :) The Polish version of palms are green twigs with colourful dried or paper flowers. Every year in a village Lipnica Murowana a palm competition is organized. The biggest palm from last year was almost 32 meters long!

Easter eggs aka Pisanki! Decorating eggs is one of the most creative Polish traditions. :) Painting, dyeing, sticking and scratching… no holds barred! Pisanki are put into Easter basket called…

Święconka. The tradition of food blessing on Holy Sunday is celebrated not only in every corner of Poland, but also by Polish communities all over the world. In a traditional Polish basket you can also find: sugar or bread lamb, salt, bread, cold meats and a piece of Easter cake.

The food can be only eaten the next day, during the breakfast feast. Holy Sunday is the only day in the whole year when breakfast is more important, fuller and longer than dinner. Of course the ‘menu’ varies from family to family and from region to region, but what can’t be missed are: meat (sausage, pâté, ham,), all kinds of eggs, vegetable salad (the queen on the Polish holiday tables :)), sour rye soup or borscht (yes, yes… soup for breakfast), and from sweets Easter cake and mazurek).

On the next day after the breakfast, the final fun begins… On Wet Monday aka Śmigus-Dyngus there is a custom to pour out water on others. The rumour has it that getting wet brings luck, so we encourage you to go out. ;)

We hope that our small tips will help you celebrate the Easter time to the maximum. The only thing left for us to do is to traditionally wish you: ‘Wesołego Alleluja, smacznego jajka i mokrego Śmigusa-Dyngusa!’ :)
